Dental Emergencies

What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is when you are experiencing severe pain on your teeth and gums due to trauma to the mouth area, severe decay that causes an abscess, or a cracked or chipped tooth due to biting on hard objects. Dental emergencies can be painful and embarrassing so it is imperative that you seek help from a dental professional as soon as possible. Delaying treatment can worsen your symptoms and can lead to an infection.

What to Do if You Have an Avulsed Tooth

An avulsed tooth is a tooth that has been knocked out of the socket completely. If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, call your dentist immediately. Here are some steps to take in the meantime before you are able to see your dentist:

  • Do not touch the root of the tooth and keep the area as clean as possible
  • Prevent the tooth from drying out by either reinserting the tooth into the socket or placing the tooth in a container with milk and bringing it to your dentist
