How do you know if you need a root canal?

A root canal is needed when the pulp or soft tissue inside the root canal is infected or inflamed. This infection is caused by bacteria, injury, crack, or decay. Root canals are a common procedure, and help to restore teeth back to a healthy condition.

Most patients will have symptoms that something is wrong, but some may not have any symptoms at all. This is why it is important to attend your regular dental appointments in our office. We will help to evaluate your teeth, and ensure they look healthy and are free of infection. If an infection is left untreated, an abscess can form and this can lead to other more serious issues. In order to preserve our natural teeth, it is important to address any issues you may have promptly.

Symptoms that signal you may need root canal:

  • Pain in or around the tooth
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Tooth injury
  • Pain while chewing food
  • Drainage or swelling around the tooth or gums
  • Jaw or tissue feels tender to the touch

Root canals are a common procedure, and the recovery is minimal allowing patients to return to normal activity shortly after the procedure is complete. Patients may experience some pain and swelling, but this should subside a few days after. In order to keep your teeth looking and feeling healthy, good oral hygiene habits are recommended. This helps to keep teeth free of bacteria that can lead to infection. Root canals can last a lifetime if you take care of your teeth and follow proper oral hygiene recommendations.
