What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are used to repair teeth that have been compromised due to decay or trauma. Inlays and onlays are a great alternative to dental crowns because it allows us to restore your tooth without having to remove too much of the enamel that is required for crown placement. It is also another alternative solution to composite fillings and can give you the healthy tooth structure that you need to restore your tooth to its normal form and function.

Why Do You Need Inlays and Onlays?

There are many reasons why you may need an inlay or onlay to restore your tooth. Some of these reasons include:

  • You have a tooth that is broken or fractured
    You have decayed teeth
  • You have fillings that have fractured or fallen out
  • You have large fillings that are worn and you need them removed or replaced
  • You need a cosmetic enhancement on your tooth

What is the Difference Between an Inlay and Onlay?

Inlays are made of porcelain to resemble your natural teeth. If you have a large cavity that needs to be filled, your dentist will remove the decay, make impressions of your teeth, and send it off to a dental lab. Once we receive your inlay, your dentist will place the it in your tooth. Onlays are very similar to inlays, except for the fact that they include the cusps of your teeth.
