What Are Orthodontics?

Dr. May Chen explains what orthodontics is and how orthodontic treatments can help you.

Align Your Teeth with Conventional Braces

Conventional braces are made of metal or porcelain and are connected by an arched wire that gradually shifts your teeth into place simultaneously. During your adjustment appointments with your dentist, the wires will be adjusted to add pressure to your teeth in order to push them into place. You will need to come in every six to eight weeks for regular adjustments.

Are There Different Types of Braces?

Subtle Teeth Alignment with Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are a great option for people who do not want visible braces. Because the aligners are transparent and do not use brackets or wires, it is not obvious that you have braces. These aligners are removable and make it easier to maintain your oral hygiene since you can brush and floss normally. Although clear aligners are just as effective as traditional braces, it requires patient compliance and takes more discipline. You must keep your aligners on at all times to avoid prolonging the treatment.
